Do Nigerian citizens need a visa to visit South Africa?

Yes, Nigerian citizens need a visa before travelling to South Africa. Nigeria is not on South Africa’s visa-exempt country list, so you must apply for a visa before travelling to the country.

Also, South Africa doesn’t issue visas on arrival, and airlines typically require you to show them a valid visa before boarding.

Nonetheless, there are exceptions. Individuals who hold a diplomatic or official Nigerian passport may be able to travel to South Africa without a visa. Ordinary passport holders, however, must get a visa before travelling.

Types of South African visas available to Nigerian citizens

Below are the different types of South African visas available to Nigerian nationals;

1. Visitor’s visa

The visitor’s visa is the most common visa for short-term stays. It is mostly used for short-term visits like tourism, to attend family functions, business meetings, or generally short trips. It is valid for 90 days.

2. Study visa

The study visa is for Nigerian citizens who want to study in a South African educational institution. It is only valid for the duration of the program of study. Students on this visa can do part-time work in the country.

3. Work visas

South Africa has different work visas depending on the nature of employment. There is the General Work Visa for applicants with a job offer from a South African employer, the Critical Skills Work Visa for people with specialised skills, and the Intra-Company Transfer Visa for employees moving within multinational companies.

4. Business visa

This visa is for Nigerians who plan to establish or invest in a business in South Africa. You will need to provide a business plan, proof of investment capital, and comply with the local requirements.

5. Family or relative visa

If you have a family member or relative in South Africa, this visa allows you to enter the country and stay with them, provided they are a citizen or permanent resident. This is a temporary resident visa, and you can use it to work or study in South Africa.

6. Transit visa

If you’re passing through South Africa on your way to another country and must pass through the airport to your next stop, you need to get a transit visa.

The requirements for getting a visa changes periodically, we recommend that you always check the South African official website for the latest information before travelling.

Do Nigerian documents need to be translated for South Africa?

Majorly, no. This is because Nigerian documents are in English, which is one of the official languages of South Africa. So if the supporting documents for your visa application are in English, there’s no need to get a certified translation. You’ll only need a translation if your documents are in another language.

Typically, South African immigration authorities require documents in a foreign language to be translated into English by a certified or sworn translator and accompanied by a certificate of accuracy. This applies to documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearance reports, driver’s license, and more.

Translating your documents into English helps immigration officers understand your information and process your application faster.

Step-by-step South Africa visa application process from Nigeria

Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide to apply for a South African visa from Nigeria;

1. Determine the correct visa type

Want to go sight seeing? Go for a visitor’s visa. Want to study? Apply for a student’s visa. Want to work? Get a work visa. You need to identify the visa type that matches your purpose of travel. Applying for the wrong visa with the wrong documents can lead to delays or rejections.

2. Prepare your documents

We’ve outlined all the major documents for your visa application above. But you’ll need to confirm which documents you’ll need for the exact visa type you’re applying for and gather them. Having everything ready also makes the submission process smoother.

3. Complete the visa application form

You must fill the South African visa form correctly and sign it before submitting. Errors or incomplete fields in your form can make authorities delay your application. Also, make sure to double-check all information before proceeding.

4. Submit your application through an authorised centre

In Nigeria, South African visa applications are usually submitted through authorised visa centres such as VFS Global offices in cities like Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt. These centres collect applications and forward them to South African immigration officials for processing.

5. Attend biometrics or additional checks if requested

As part of the visa application process, you may be asked to provide biometric data or attend an interview. When booking your appointment, you can choose from any of the three centres:

Abuja

Monday to Friday

08:00 - 17:00

Lagos

Monday to Friday

08:00 - 17:00

Port Harcourt

Monday to Friday

08:00 - 17:00

Prepare for it ahead of time, as it helps authorities to verify your identity and determine your eligibility.

6. Wait for processing and collect your visa

After submission, you will receive information regarding your visa status. The South African Visa for Nigerian citizens processing time is a minimum of 15 working days. However, this might be more due to delays in documentation or additional checks.  In case of approval, you must bring the original receipt that was issued to you at the time of submission of the visa application for collection. The collection timing is 10:00 - 16:00 (Monday-Friday except holidays). You can also have your documents returned to you by courier based on the delivery option you selected during the application process.

Tips for a successful visa application from Nigeria to South Africa

Here are some tips to help with your visa application to South Africa;

1. Start your application early

We probably sound like a broken record at this point, but it’s very important that you apply for your visa very early. Of all things, you really want to avoid scrambling for documents at the very last minute. Also, except you have diplomatic ties, visa processing takes time depending on your visa category.

2. Apply for the right visa category

Short term purposes like tourism, event attendance, business meetings, etc all fall under the visitor visa category. Someone without proper research can go to apply for a long-term business visa and be wondering why their application was rejected. Remember, every visa type has specific supporting documents, and mixing things up can delay or deny your visa application.

3. Show strong financial evidence

They say money makes the world go round. And it’s true, as it also applies in visa applications. If you’re going to South Africa, or any other country in general, you must show that you have the financial power to support yourself throughout your stay. Weak or irregular statements are a common reason your visa is refused.

4. Ensure all your documents are complete

Whether it's your birth certificate, drivers license, marriage certificate, etc. make sure they’re all intact. And if you have to get a translation, check that there are no errors or incorrect spellings, and that everything is accurate.
