Having a UK passport can unlock tons of benefits, so it is no wonder why you are interested in getting one. In this blog post, we will take you through the ins and outs of getting your UK passport, the necessary paperwork and the steps to complete the process.

What is a UK Passport?

A UK passport is an official travel document issued by the government of the United Kingdom to its citizens and certain nationals that serves as proof of identity and citizenship, allowing its holder to travel internationally. The passport mostly includes important information about its holder, such as their name, photograph, nationality, date of birth, and their unique passport number. It may also contain various security features to prevent forgery and tampering.

Understanding the Types of UK Passports

The United Kingdom has a variety of passports for different purposes. Some are still in use while others have been phased out. Let’s take a look at them:

1.The Blue UK Passport:

As the name implies, this passport has a blue soft cover with a gold Royal crest on the front cover. It was first issued by Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the year 2020 and after that.
The holder's details and photo can be found on a polycarbonate page at the back of the passport.
Immigration observations may be added depending on whether the passport was issued before or after the 31st of December, 2020.

2. The Burgundy UK Passports:

This passport was used before 2020 and had a burgundy cover, primarily following the EU and non-EU common format but was stopped before December 31st, 2020 because of the UK’s exit from the EU.
There were two types of the Burgundy Passport:
- Burgundy non-EU common format UK passports: This was issued to individuals not entitled to an EU common format passport and issuance was stopped before December 31, 2020.

- Burgundy EU common format passports: This was issued to UK nationals for EU purposes, with "European Union" on the cover. Similarly, it phased out by December 31, 2020.

3. The Channel Islands and Isle of Man Passport:

This has a similar style to UK passports but with the territory name instead of "United Kingdom" on the cover.
Some observations were added before December 31, 2020, for limitations on the free movement of UK citizens from the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

4. British Overseas Territory Variant Passport:

This is also similar to UK passports, but with the territory name on the cover instead of “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.
It is issued to eligible UK Overseas Territories (BOT) citizens living in a BOT.
Also, instead of the salutations of the reigning monarch, the salutation on the inside of the front cover will be in the name of the relevant lieutenant governor or governor.

5. Diplomatic and Official Passports:

These look similar to standard passports but with additional gold lettering on the cover that says “Official” or “Diplomatic”. Older versions of these passports may only have these words above the photograph or on the personal details, instead of on the cover. It is issued under strict regulation.

6. King’s Messenger Service Passports:

These are issued to Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) staff acting as diplomatic couriers.
It was changed from Queen’s to King’s Messenger in November 2022 before which it was an Old Blue style hardback passport, which had ‘Queen’s Messenger Service’ printed in gold letters on the front.

7. Collective Passports:

Collective passports are issued to groups of young people under the age of 18 for educational or cultural purposes.
There are two types of Collective Passports, one is called Collective Passports for young people and the other, is The Council of Europe Collective Passports for Young People.
They are only valid for travel to and from the UK to certain EU countries.
Oversees applications for this passport are not accepted.

8. Specimen Passports:

These passports are used for training, for fraud prevention, and for entertainment purposes

9. Old Blue (Hardback Style) Passports:

Issued in 1920, the Old Blue passport was dark blue, almost black with a hardback cover. It had 30 pages in a standard passport and 94 pages in a Frequent Traveller passport and was printed in both English and French. The Old Blue was personalised by hand with the customer’s details but phased out and replaced by the standard passport format.

10. British Visitor Passports (BVP):

These were introduced in 1961 and took the form of a card folded into three parts. It was handwritten and included a photo of the customer. It was used for short (3 months) holidays and private visits to certain European countries and was valid for only a year.
It was available to customers who had been living in the UK for more than 8 years and who were also UK citizens, UK overseas citizens or UK Dependent Territories citizens.
It was not considered a secure document and was withdrawn on the 1st of January 1996 due to security concerns.

How to Apply for a UK Passport

Step One: Make Sure you are Registered as a UK Citizen

Only citizens of the UK can hold a UK Passport. Be sure to register as a citizen first before applying for your UK passport. It will take about 4-7 months to register as a UK citizen and up to 2 months to get your passport.

Step Two: Organize Your Paperwork

You must send only your original documents when applying for a passport. Photocopies will not accepted. For documents that you are unable to gather, you are permitted to get an official copy. These are the documents needed to apply for your first UK passport:

Birth or adoption certificate (if you were born in the UK before January 1983).
Evidence of one of your parents’ immigration status (if you were born in the UK after January 1983).
Certificate of naturalization or registration, if you were born abroad.
Supporting documents.
A countersignatory (a person to confirm your identity) if you are applying with a paper form. He or she must be a UK or Irish citizen, must have known you for at least two years and must currently live in the United Kingdom. They must be recognised as “a person of good standing in their community”, not be related to you by birth or marriage, nor be in a personal relationship with you. They should also not be living at your address or be working for the Home Office.

Your last UK passport or any valid passports that were issued in another country if you are renewing.

Note that if your documents are not written in English or Welsh during your application for a UK passport, you must provide a Certified translation for them.

Step Three: Apply Online, by Post or by Appointment:

UK passport applications can be done in either of three ways. You could apply online, via your local post office or book an appointment.

Online Application: Go to the website of the UK Government and begin your application. It is easier to apply this way because the application wizard will guide you through each step of the process.

Application by Post: You can send your application with the necessary documents, to the UK Visa and Immigration office. Do not forget to attach the correct postage to your envelope. Alternatively, Your local Post Office can take care of going through your documents and confirming them, and they will send them to the HM Passport Office by Special Delivery for an additional fee.

Application by Appointment: You can book an appointment at the HM Passport Office to begin your process. You may be offered the 1-day Premium and 1-week Fast Track service option when you arrive, to help speed up your process.

Step Four: Pay the Passport Fees

Please, have the following in mind concerning Passport fees:

When applying from outside the UK, the fee depends on the type of application you are sending. You will have to pay a courier fee of £5 to cover the cost of securely returning your new passport and supporting documents back to you.
UK passport application fees are not refundable if your application is unsuccessful or withdrawn.

Step Five: Wait for Your Passport

UK passport renewal from inside the United Kingdom takes 5 weeks while renewing from outside takes 6-8 weeks.

While first-time UK Passport processing time takes between 10 to 16 weeks. However, if you provide everything that is required to prove your citizenship and there are no hitches along the way, you may get your passport application approved within as little as 4 weeks.
