Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL): used for the subclass 189, 190, and 491 visas.
Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL): used for the subclass 190 and 491 visas
Regional Occupation List (ROL): used for the subclass 491 visa
Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): a separate list of around 456 occupations introduced on 7 December 2024 for the Core Skills stream of the Skills in Demans 9subclass 482) visa and the Direct Entry stream of the subclass 186 visa.
VETASSESS differs from other assessment bodies by covering a broad range of occupations. While some authorities focus on specific professions, like Engineers Australia for engineers or ANMAC for nurses, VETASSESS assesses more than 360 general professional occupations and certain trade occupations. This makes it one of the most versatile and widely used assessment authorities in the migration process.
A positive VETASSESS assessment is mandatory for applicants pursuing the following skilled migration pathways:
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
Employer-sponsored applicants may also need one. The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa, requires a skills assessment for some occupations and passport holders. The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) Direct Entry Stream also requires one.
For example, a Management Consultant applying for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) has an occupation listed on the MLTSSL and assessed by VETASSESS. They must obtain a positive VETASSESS outcome before lodging the visa application. Without it, their qualifications and experience are not recognised for migration purposes.

Every document you upload for a VETASSESS application must be in English. If any qualification, transcript, reference letter or identity document is in another language, you must upload the original together with a complete certified English translation. VETASSESS treats a missing or unverified translation as an incomplete document, which triggers a further-information request and delays your outcome.
The rules follow the Department of Home Affairs standard;

The translation must reflect the original document exactly, without summaries or omissions. It must also be linked to the original document it translates.
You must upload both the original document (in its native language) and the corresponding English translation.
In some cases, VETASSESS may request certified copies of the original documents. Always check the document requirements for your occupation group before submitting.

Once you have all the documents, proceed to the official VETASSESS website and create your account. Enter your details accurately as they appear on your account. This account is where you will submit documents, track progress, and download your outcome letter
Carefully complete the online form with details such as personal information and your educational and employment history. Every date, job title, and institution name should match your supporting documents to avoid inconsistencies.
Upload high-quality color scans of the original documents (maximum 5 MB per file). If a document is damaged or illegible, request a replacement from the issuing authority rather than uploading it as is. Attach each non-English document together with its certified English translation.
Pay the assessment fee online through the VETASSESS portal by credit or debit card. If you want Priority Processing, you must select it before you submit. You cannot add it later. Check the current fee schedule below before you pay, as fees for professional occupations change every year.
Double-check everything one last time and submit. You can track your assessment progress through the VETASSESS online account you created. VETASSESS may contact you to request additional documents or clarification, so monitor your account and email regularly and respond within the 28-day notice it gives you. If everything is done correctly, you should be able to download your skill assessment outcome from your profile.

Two things to know about faster processing;
Priority Processing is a paid add-on for professional and general occupations. Demand is high, so applicants who can show an urgent need are prioritised. You also cannot upload further documents once it is accepted.
Free urgent processing is available if you already have a visa invitation with a 60-day lodgement deadline and your previous assessment has expired. Email VETASSESS with evidence of the invitation.
Note: All timelines are estimates. Verification with overseas universities and employers, or a request for additional evidence, adds time.
VETASSESS fees vary by assessment type and any optional supplementary services, such as Priority Processing. Fees for professional occupations increased in line with CPI in September 2026, but the trade fees did not change. Applicants who are Australian residents pay 10% GST on top of the figures below for tax purposes.
