What type of visa do Indian citizens need to visit Canada?

Indian citizens intending to travel to Canada for tourism, business, or study purposes require a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). If you plan to study for more than six months or work in Canada, you also need a study permit or work permit. You apply for the permit, and IRCC issues the visa you need to travel along with it.

IRCC issues the TRV for various short durations based on the nature of the visit. Remember, a visa doesn't guarantee entry into Canada; it only lets you travel to a port of entry, where an immigration officer decides whether you can enter Canada.

If you plan to stay in Canada longer, you may need to apply for a Canadian work permit or a permanent resident visa.  Before applying for a visa, always check the specific requirements for your purpose of visit on the official Canadian government page. If you want to visit Canada for a short period, here are some reasons they may issue a visa or a permit for:

  1. Visit to see a family member or friend.

  2. Visit Canada on business.

  3. Visit Canada for employment (you will also need a work permit)

  4. Visit Canada to study (you will also need a study permit for programmes longer than six months)

  5. Visit Canada to pass through to another destination (Transit).

  6. Visit the Canadian border to gather immigration information.

  7. Visit Canada to receive medical care.

How do I apply for a Canadian visitor visa as an Indian citizen?

If you would like to visit Canada, you should know the visa application process involves a series of steps:

1. Determine your eligibility: Visit the Government of Canada's official website and answer a few questions to identify the right visa for your travel purpose.

2. Create an account on the website: If you need to apply for a visa at the end of the questions, create an account and submit an application. To do this;

  • Click ‘Visit’ at the top of the web page where the answer to the questions you were asked was provided.

  • After that, click ‘Apply for a visitor visa’.

  • Next, click option No. 5, “Apply,” read the page content, and then select an option when you are asked, “Why are you applying for a visitor visa?”

  • Select “Get instructions” and click the affirmative repeat question of the reason you picked on the next page that shows up.

  • A prompt will appear asking you to apply through the IRCC portal; follow it and create an account.

3. Apply for the visa: Fill out the application form with accurate information, submit all the necessary supporting documents, and pay the necessary fees of about 100 CAD, plus 85 CAD for biometrics. Fees are charged in Canadian dollars, so the amount in rupees depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay.

You can pay with a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, or JCB card. Once you complete the application and payment, submit the form online. If you are already in Canada, submit your application before your visitor status expires.

4. Give your biometrics: After you apply and pay, you will get a letter asking you to go for your fingerprints and photo capture at a visa application center in India. Biometrics are valid for 10 years, so you may not need to give them again if you did so recently.

What documents are required for a Canadian visa application as an Indian citizen?

The following supporting documents are required for a Canadian visa application:

  1. Valid passport: You need a valid Indian passport with at least one blank page, excluding the last page. It must be valid for the duration of stay for the visa you are applying for.

  2. Two recent photographs: If you apply online, upload a digital photo that meets IRCC’s specifications for photographs. You only need two printed photos for paper applications.

  3. Proof that supports the purpose of your visit: Depending on your purpose for visiting Canada, you need to be able to show proof of your employment with a Canadian employer, an invitation to a conference, proof of a medical visit, proof of family ties, in the case of a family visit, or proof of your admission to a Canadian University or College.

  4. Travel itinerary: If you have already made travel arrangements, this entails submitting documents that clearly show how long you will be in Canada and what you plan to do during your stay. You can show this through documents like hotel reservations, car rental receipts, flight tickets, workshop/event registration.

  5. Identity documents: This includes your passport, national identity card, driver's license, or any other document that you use to identify yourself. All passports can be accepted for this purpose, except passports issued by the Somali government, non-machine-readable passports issued by the Czech Republic, temporary passports issued by the Republic of South Africa, and provisional passports issued by Venezuela. These will not be accepted.

  6. Letter of invitation: If you're visiting family or friends, a letter of invitation from your host in Canada can strengthen your application. It is not always mandatory, but IRCC may ask for one.

  7. Financial proof: This includes recent bank statements showing that you have enough funds for your stay in Canada, i.e bank name & contact. However, if you are applying as a skilled worker who already has a valid job offer, you do not need to show proof of funds.

These are some of the documents you will be required to submit with your visa application. Visit the official Canadian government site for the full list of required documents. Also note that documents that are not in English or French must be translated by a Canadian certified translator, or by any other person who is fluent in both languages, as long as you include a sworn affidavit from that person.

You and your family members cannot translate your own documents. Applications with missing or unacceptable translations may be refused or returned. Submit a copy of the original document along with the translation.

How much does a Canadian visa cost for Indian citizens?

The application fee for a Canadian TRV is CAD $100 per person. Most applicants also pay CAD $85 for biometrics (CAD $170 for a family).  Extending your stay as a visitor also costs CAD $100. These fees are subject to change by the Canadian government; check the official website for the most up-to-date information before applying.

Canadian visa renewal for Indian citizens

Just like the original visa application, extending your stay in Canada as an Indian citizen requires careful attention and preparation. The process is essentially similar to the initial application and can also be completed online through the official Government of Canada website.

The document you get when you extend your stay is called a visitor record. A visitor record is different from a visitor visa. A visitor record lets you stay longer, but it does not let you re-enter Canada. If you plan to leave and come back after your visa expires, you need to apply for a new visitor visa.

The necessary documents for your visa renewal include:

  • Your current visa

  • Proof of your continued eligibility for the visa and

  • Visitor record form (Online)

  • Other documents similar to those needed for the original visa application.

Make sure you still meet the visa requirements and have maintained your status while in Canada. Monitor the date your visitor status expires. It is usually stamped in your passport or set at six months from entry.

This is not the same as your visa’s expiry date. Apply to extend your stay at least 30 days before your status expires. If you apply before it expires, you can stay in Canada under the same conditions while IRCC processes your application.

Remember, staying after your status expires can lead to complications, such as being ineligible for future visa renewals. Another essential part of the visa renewal process is providing certified translations for any documents not in English or French. Professional translation services can be invaluable, ensuring your renewal application is accurate and complete.

Overall, while the process may seem daunting, careful preparation and attention to detail can make renewing your Canadian visa as an Indian citizen a streamlined process.

Conclusion

While applying for a Canadian visa as an Indian citizen may seem complex, careful preparation and a clear understanding of the requirements can make the process smoother. Paying attention to details, like providing certified translations, can greatly increase your chances of success. Embrace the process, prepare adequately, and soon you may be on your way to experiencing Canada's beauty and diversity!
