Certified Translation Requirements in Portugal

In Portugal, the concept of a "Certified Translator" as it exists in many other countries is not the same. Here, when an official translation is required, it can be carried out by a number of authorized entities or individuals. This includes the Portuguese Notary Office, Central Registry, Civil Registry, Portuguese consulate in the country where the document was issued, Consulate representing the country where the document was issued in Portugal, Chambers of Commerce and Industry (recognized in accordance with Decree-Law 244/92 of 29 October), as well as Lawyers and Solicitors.

Alternatively, a translation may also be produced by a qualified translator, who must then have their work certified by one of the above-mentioned entities. Prior to certification, the translator has to confirm their identity and assure the fidelity of their translation to the original text.

This process, which includes signing and sealing by the certifying entity, ensures that the translation is accurate, authentic, and legally recognized in Portugal. It's crucial to note that the person for whom the translated document is intended, or their immediate family members, cannot act as the translator.

This system offers a high level of assurance, with multiple safeguards in place to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of certified translations.

Using a Certified Translator in Portugal

If you are a citizen of Portugal who wants to visit another country that speaks a different language from Portuguese, you will do well to find out the specific translation requirement of the country you will be visiting, to avoid any confusion. After doing this, if you find out the country does not have a strict translation requirement, you can have your translations done by a certified translator in Portugal, a Portuguese notary, a lawyer or a translator who is a member of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Similarly, if you have business in Portugal as a foreign national, you can have all your necessary documents translated by these same set of people or by the approved translation authority in your country.

Our team of certified translators in Portugal has years of experience and a deep understanding of the legal requirements for certified translations. Our certified translators are fluent in Portuguese and the source or target languages, ensuring the highest level of accuracy in the translation process. We guarantee that your documents will be translated faithfully in line with the original, with our signature and seal certifying the translation. The document will also be notarized appropriately.

Translayte is a translation agency with proven experience providing certified translations to our customers globally. You can receive your accurate translations from us on the same day, or within 24 hours, with 100% guaranteed acceptance by the Portuguese authorities.
