Professional Official (Certified) Translations in Greece

If you are travelling to Greece to work, study, start a business, or simply for immigration purposes, you will need an official translation of your documents from any foreign language to Greek.

These official translations (επίσημη μετάφραση) are required for legal, academic, and business purposes in Greece. They must be completed by a sworn translator (δικαστικός μεταφραστής) registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You can find sworn translators from the Register of Certified Translators compiled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The official translation can be provided by either a Lawyer who is a member of the Greek Bar Associations following the Code of Lawyers (Article 36, Law No. 4194/2013 / GG 208 / 27.09.2013), or by a graduate from the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University. These translations are available in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German, following the opinion of the Legal Council of State 4952004.

Whether you need a certified translation from Greek to English or other languages to Greek, you can access a network of approved translators on Translayte. We offer official, legally valid translations accepted by government institutions, universities, and businesses throughout Greece.

Document Legalisation in Greece

Translated documents will need to be legalised using an official stamp of approval. In Greece, documents can be legalised in two ways: By Hague apostilles and by Consular Legalisations.

A Hague apostille is a form of legalisation that requires using a stamp or certificate that makes a document valid and proves its origin by confirming the legitimacy of the signature and the authority of the official who signed it. It's a simplified way of proving that the document is real and official.

Apostille legalisation ensures that documents are recognised as valid in countries that are part of the Hague Convention of 1961 on the simplification of the apostille. It simplifies the process of cross-border document recognition, eliminating the need for additional certifications like consular legalisation in member states.

Documents can also be legalised by the consular authorities in the country of origin of the document or by the consular authority of that country in Greece and are validated by the competent office of the Service and Information Centre for Greek Citizens and Expatriates (KEPPAE).

Documents from countries (such as Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Peru, Tunisia, Philippines, Kosovo, and Pakistan) where Greece has expressed reservations about their accession to the Hague Convention, can only be validated by the relevant Greek consular authority.
