Sworn Translation Services in Spain
If you submit a document that is not in Spanish as part of an official application in Spain, you will be asked to provide an official translation of it.
In Spain, a sworn translation is a traducción jurada, produced and certified by a translator with the relevant title issued by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
We translate immigration, business, legal, and academic documents. Our sworn translators ensure every detail is translated accurately, preserving the original text's meaning and intent and including the required certification elements.
Sworn Translation Requirements in Spain
A Spanish Traductor Jurado is a translator who has obtained the relevant title from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. The Ministry's Language Interpretation Office (Oficina de Interpretación de Lenguas) administers the official title and register.
Appointment is not conditional on the translator living in Spain. Spanish regulations allow a sworn translator to practice regardless of residence, subject to the applicable requirements for exercising the activity.
The sworn translation must include the translator's certification, signature and seal or the applicable electronic signature, and information about the language and translator.
The legal framework includes Real Decreto 724/2020 and the rules governing certification, signature, seal, and the accompanying copy of the original document.
Translayte assigns Spanish sworn translations i to sworn translators authorised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They translate, certify, and publish the document in Spain or abroad.
Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains an official register of Traductores Jurados and Intérpretes Jurados. You can use it to verify a translator's name, language authorisation and registration details before ordering. Translayte sworn translations include details you can use to verify the assigned translator's credentials.
Sworn Translations for use in Spain vs Spanish Embassies
Depending on the embassy or use case, you may be asked for any of the following types of translations:
Sworn translation into Spanish: As explained above, a sworn translator translates from English (or any other language) into Spanish. The translation will be valid at any Spanish embassy and within Spain, so we recommend it if you intend to use the document within Spain.
Business certification: In some cases, such as in the United Kingdom, the Spanish embassy will accept certified translations from the United Kingdom into Spanish. They are generally needed to support visa and residency applications submitted to the Spanish embassy. These translations will not be admissible in Spain, so it is not advisable if you intend to present the document within Spain.
Are electronic Sworn Translations Valid in Spain?
Yes, Spanish regulations now expressly regulate electronic certification by Traductores Jurados and Intérpretes Jurados. Under Orden AUC/213/2025, a sworn translator can certify a translation using a qualified electronic signature. The electronic certification must meet the prescribed requirements, including the translator's identification, authorised language, and registration number. The electronic signature is applied to the document containing the original and translation, with PDF signing preferred for text documents.
This means a sworn translation can be delivered electronically when it meets the applicable requirements and the receiving authority accepts electronic documents.

What Details Should a Sworn Spanish Translator Include in a Translation?
To ensure the document's legal validity, sworn translators must meet specific requirements; these details are essential for official institutions in Spain to accept it. This is what a Spanish sworn translator should include:
Translator's affidavit: Each sworn translation must include a certification statement. It declares that the translation is exact and faithful to the original document. It is a formal statement by the translator about the quality and reliability of his work.
Signature and seal: The sworn translator must sign the translated document. Along with your signature, you must also include a unique seal granted by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This seal includes the translator's identification and certification number, verifying its authority and credibility.
Date and place of translation: The document must include the date and place where the translation was performed. This information is crucial to the document's validity, especially in legal or administrative processes where time is of the essence.
References to the original document: The translator must refer to the original document in the translation. This includes details about the nature of the original document, its origin, and any specific identifiers such as document numbers or official seals.
Translator contact details: Clearly indicate the sworn translator's contact details, including their name and address. This information is necessary if authorities require verification of the translator.
Sequential page numbering: If the translation covers several pages, each of them must be numbered sequentially. This numbering is crucial to ensure the integrity and consistency of the document.
